Dark blue, with the arms of the city: the flag of Pescara
This flag is a plain dark blue field. In the centre stands the shield of the city under a golden mural crown, framed by two leafy branches tied with a ribbon in the Italian tricolour. Below, on grey scrolls, a Latin motto: «HAEC EST CIVITAS ATERNI PORTA APRUTII ET SERA REGNI».
Sea, tower and castle
The Statute of the Comune of Pescara describes the arms in two parts. On the left, a field of sky blue with a tower beside a church standing on a rolling sea, with a golden wavy comet at the upper corner; on the right, blue again, with a castle ending in a crenellated tower on a silver wavy sea. A gold vertical band divides the two parts, and it stands for the union of the Comuni of Pescara and Castellammare Adriatico (Royal Decree of 2 January 1927, no. 1). The arms were recognised by Royal Decree of 6 October 1927.
Il motto
The statute says the motto under the arms recalls that the city has its roots in Roman Aternum, which became Piscaria in the Middle Ages and then Pescara. Italian Wikipedia gives its sense as «This is the city of Aterno, gateway of Abruzzo and border of the Kingdom».
City, gonfalone and a poet
Pescara was awarded the title of Città in 1987. Its gonfalone, approved by Presidential Decree no. 4158 of 2 September 1988, is a cloth divided white and blue, richly embroidered in gold and carrying the civic arms with the gold inscription «Città di Pescara». The statute also names Pescara as the homeland of the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, and the city received the Gold Medal for Civil Merit on 8 February 2001.
